The spaces between fingers in this palmistry question are the gaps between index and middle, middle and ring, and ring and little fingers. Cheiro associated wide gaps there with different kinds of independence. That tells us what one palmistry author believed, not what a photograph proves about its owner.
Before accepting a label such as “independent”, ask two smaller questions: Which space is being described? What pose does the picture show? Those questions have visible answers. A judgement about someone's character does not follow from them.
Which three spaces does the label describe?
Start with the four fingers above the palm, leaving the thumb aside. There are three neighbouring pairs:
- Index–middle: between the finger beside the thumb and the next finger.
- Middle–ring: between that middle finger and the ring finger.
- Ring–little: between the ring finger and the smallest finger on the outer side.
These are spaces between fingers, not creases drawn across the palm. A gap's location is also a different question from the shape at a fingertip or the outline at a joint. The beginner's palm-reading tour keeps those feature types in context.
The opening between thumb and index finger is a separate subject. Our thumb palmistry guide owns that angle and its historical vocabulary; it is not a fourth gap in the map below.

Teaching illustration of two chosen poses, not a resting-posture test, measured photograph or personality assessment. The same conceptual hand is drawn twice.

Photo tips
Keep your palm flat, fingers slightly apart and lines in focus. Use bright, even light, and photograph each palm the same way.

Cheiro's three associations, clearly attributed
In Part II, Chapter III of Palmistry for All, Cheiro gives the following associations. He numbers the fingers from index through little; the thumb is separate. His passage concerns wide spaces, not a numerical gap scale.
| Space | Cheiro's association for a wide gap | What the attribution does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Index–middle | Independence of thought | Whether this person thinks independently |
| Middle–ring | Independence of circumstances | Their finances, obligations or future circumstances |
| Ring–little | Independence of action | What they will do or whether you should trust them |
Keep the middle row's wording as circumstances. Replacing it with a confident claim about spending, freedom or wealth would add a conclusion the table has not earned.
Nor does this passage give us a defensible millimetre cutoff, a good-to-bad ranking, or inverse meanings for narrow spaces. “Cheiro associated this with…” is a historical statement. “You are…” would be a personal verdict. The first can be attributed; the second is not established by the picture.
One hand, two poses: what the picture can show
Look again at the paired illustration. In A, the fingers are drawn closer together. In B, they are drawn farther apart. The labelled pairs stay the same; the depicted openings change.
That is the whole demonstration. We chose different positions for an illustration. We did not measure anyone's usual posture, test movement, or discover a change in their personality.
Try writing a caption for B using three ingredients: the image, the chosen pose, and the visible space. For example:
Drawing B shows a left palm with the fingers deliberately farther apart; the middle–ring opening is visible.
Compare that with “This person is carefree.” The caption lets another reader check what you are pointing to. The verdict asks them to accept something the drawing cannot show. If you have a real photograph, describe that photograph instead of calling it Drawing B, and do not claim a deliberate pose unless you know it was chosen.
No special photographing ritual is needed for this caption exercise. If your separate goal is taking a usable upload photo, follow the clear-palm-photo guide, not an invented spacing test.
When the question is about your hand, not a symbol
If pain is what brought you to this question, a palmistry label is not an explanation. The NHS finger-pain guidance advises against self-diagnosing the cause. Seek appropriate healthcare advice rather than treating a gap or its symbolic meaning as a diagnosis.
Nothing in the diagram assesses health, movement or whether a real hand is “normal”. It is a vocabulary aid. You can leave the symbolism aside without leaving an actual health concern unanswered.
Use the description, leave the verdict
You can borrow independence as a reflection theme without making your hand its proof. A question such as “Where would I like more room to choose?” is yours to consider whatever the spacing looks like. It need not determine a financial decision, a friendship or anyone else's character.
If you are considering an AI-assisted interpretation, how PalmMingle approaches palmistry explains its limits. The labelled worked sample lets you inspect the format; it is not your personal reading or a customer's result. Current pricing offers three saved readings for $9.99 paid once, with Mina follow-up questions. Generation requires sign-in and a reading credit.
That offer is not a verified finger-gap classifier or a personality measurement. The map and caption above work without uploading or purchasing anything. Name the space, attribute the belief, and keep the person's story open.
Palmistry is an interpretive tradition, not a diagnostic tool. PalmMingle frames palm readings as entertainment and self-reflection, not prediction.
